Fred Van Horn writes from a lifetime of experience, reflection, and a deep interest in character, duty, and the choices that define us. His work invites readers to look beyond first impressions, consider people honestly, and recognize courage in both extraordinary moments and ordinary life.
Colonel Fred Van Horn retired from the U.S. Army in 1995 after thirty-three years of service, and from Georgia Military College in 2016, where he served in senior leadership roles — including as Interim President — and was named Executive Vice President Emeritus. He is a combat veteran of Vietnam and a recipient of the Purple Heart. In Milledgeville, Georgia, he has continued a life of service through civic leadership. He was married to his late wife, Tomi, for fifty-three years, and is the father of one daughter and grandfather of two.
He began collecting the reflections and stories that became this book after a chance encounter on a street corner in Kyiv, Ukraine.
